Vinod- Yah, im helping not controlling

1)In your opinion, how key is the parent-child relationship to Vinod inevitable in the end?

Vinod Parents is one of the major cause of his downfall which means to his death. They didnt give him freedom and has abandon him due to his illness.Based on act 2 scene 3 "Saloma i rather not talk about my parents, their career is going well, they are top people". He thinks that they dont care anymore however if he recieve even a slight of his parents love he wouldnt have died.

2)Vinod's high expectation of himself caused his downfall?

Yes I agree, Vinod expected himself to be the best and in control. He achieved well in his academic result however this made him have so much stress, his parents also puts him on pressure that he can't cope to have any breaks. Furthermore, he wants to control Saloma as he think he is stronger but when the robbery came he realize that he's the one on need and his high expectation was a failure therefore causing more downfall.

3)Discuss the reason of Saloma's transformation on play?

Saloma at first was weaker than Vinod. As the play goes, it's revealed that Saloma eventually growing stronger even surpassing Vinod. One cause of her transformation is her friendship with Vinod and Emily as they are there for her providing her laughter and away from loneliness. Unlike Vinod, Saloma has a loving mother even though her mother has different aspect of saloma's illness, she care for saloma and wants her to recover. Another reason is that when Saloma realizes that Vinod needs help after the robbery, she told herself that she's going to be there for him therefore showing that she grow mentally stronger than ever.

4)Though a minor role of play, Razali is the key to the plot of the centre?

Even though Razali is just a minor character, he is important as he is just Vinod's Subconscience. After the robbery, Vinod blamed razali for not doing his job however vinod is actually blaming himself and realizing that he had failed to protect Saloma.

5)Datta. Dayadham. Damyatta. Means to Give. Syphatize. Control. How did the major characters in play exert control in their environment or their lives?

In my opinion, Emily told this to Vinod as this is probably what is lacking from Vinod and would help him.

6)Discuss how peer acceptance and and family support are vital role to social status and mental well-being?

Vinod didnt recieve any parental support while Saloma did and in the end Vinod was weaker and Saloma stronger therefore that family support is important.

How is motherhood presented in any two or three stories in the collection?

Tanjong Rhu
In this story, is the relation between Edward and his mother. Edward's mother depended on him. As motherhood, her son offered her glasses. It's a sign or inherent worthiness, justiness or goodness that is obvious. Her sufferings is somehow wanted to be eased by her son.

The Move
It is the essence of Madam Teo's character and sufferings from her past that strengthened her will and ability to move on with life and cope with urbanisation/changes. Correspondingly, the support of her children and family togetherness also helped her to adapt to new surroundings as demonstrated in moving her belongings to another flat and having her grandchild call her from overseas.

Select Two stories in which the is conflict between parent and child, and show how far there is some resolution of these differences at the end of the story?

Lee

.Another conflict is when Lee suddenly asked”How come you never wrote this is an internal conflict. This made him feel uneasy as he himself did not know why he didn’t write to Lee
.Another external conflict is when Dad said”Do you have to dress like that? This made Lee lose her temper. Maybe she reacted this way because she still cannot accept the culture

With reference to suitable stories, discuss how far change is shown to be either welcomed or feared?

Hamid and the hand of fate

In the story, Hamid and the hand of fate. Change is welcome to the full extent. Hamid from the start was not popular in his community. But when he had the accident where he lost his hand, he was given a sum of $80 000 for his injury. After he was given the money, he became popular in his community. That is how change is welcomed in the story, Hamid and the hand of fate.

How are young people and their ideals presented in 2 or 3 stories in the collection? How far do you identify with these young people?

Evening under frangipani

Elaine's and Prakash

Thier ideal is their love among each other and the way they view each other. In my opinion, they are presented as the main characters in the story. In the story, they had problems with each other maybe similar to typical problems in singapore.

History of Tea

The ideal presented is the story of Beverly. She is presented in a particular manner from her family tree. Beverly is a mix a race, and she has alot of problems in her life. The way she handles tea is one of the example that shows how she is presented in the story, that links with the story, history of tea.

Choose two stories that reveal the thinking of an older generation of singaporeans. what new insights have you gained from such a revelation?

Tanjong rhu

In this story, they reveal the thinking of older generation such as Mr Li's mother.
Their old memories revealed their thinking as in this story, it's stated that Mr Li's mother was longing to see tanjong rhu but back in time where her husband still lives even though it's impossible. This tells me that old singaporeans (based on this story) are nostalgic.

History of Tea

In this story, they reaveal the thinking of old generation such as Por Por, Sherrie's mother. She is caring, she wants the best for her daughter but she is also rather racist as some old typical singaporeans are as she don't wan her daughter marrying uncle Raja.

Lit

Lit holiday.....

Evening Under Frangipani

Conflicts: External conflict- Between Prakash and Elaine, Prakash was laughing because he suddenly remembers that Elaine’s fathers hand look like beetles and so are Elaine’s.
Internal Conflict- Elaine doesn’t want to talk to Prakash.
Climax: The climax is when Elaine doesn’t want to see Prakash again.
Resolution: Open ended resolution as the story just stated about a fresh piece of chicken.
Characters: Elaine- Elaine is the type of person who doesn’t usually jump to conclusion. However, it is not always because she didn’t wanted to see Prakash again even through just small misunderstanding
Prakash- Clumsy, as stated at page. 50 and made a mistake of pointing that Elaine’s fathers hand looks like a beetle. He is also the type who does’nt give up easily as he insisted to see Elaine again and again even though she doesn’t want to see him. Prakash
Elaine’s Father- gentle, as stated in page 60, Elaine’s father is quite unusual as he displays insects pose which made Prakash laughed at the thought.
The most interesting segment when Elaine and Prakash started argueing as it is when the climax started. It revealed more about their characterestics and point towards each other like Elaine being sensitive when Prakash talk about her father. Also when Prakash get annoyed when Elaine just ran off even through just a small matter. It also made small matters worst as Elaine at a point did’nt want to talk to Prakash as she ran to hide with her mother.

Lee

Conflicts- When Lee’s father hugged his daughter, she accepted it with a sort of grudging nonchalence. She’s probably happy at the same time as she didn’t see her father for a long time but bears a grudge about the child custody eight years ago
Another conflict is when Lee’s mindset was provoked when he become annoyed at his sister’s comments regarding Lee “Havocs”. Furthermore, his sister accused him of giving into Lee’s demands, which mean an indulgence rather than controlling or disciplining his daughter.
Climax- The climax is when Lee was provoked by her father’s sister comment.

Resolution- Open ended, as the story ended unconnected to the main point.
Characters: Lee’s father- Bold, Lee’s boldness in apologising for her actions made him find that it is harder to accept her apology than her recalcitrance. This show that Lee is not use from people apologising to him. Loyal, he wanted to be loyal to single culture.
Lee - She never understood that one sometimes needed a modicum of privacy, a moment to take a stock; everything had to be done as a family.
Father’s sister- thinks that she is right that Lee’s father should discipline her, but doesn’t understand their feelings as they were seperated for years.
The most interesting segment of the story is the last part of the story, he ‘had become impassioned the first time in years’ because as he rattled off about why asians continued holding onto dogmatic values and traditions, he gained the answer to Lee’s conflicting struggles to adapt to the asian culture.
An Obituary for the fifth aunt come late
Internal conflict- one is in between the aunt’s temptation to learn how to read and her belief in the stigma that a dressmaker’s assistant could not be liberate at that time
External conflict- When the aunt was sick during her childhood days. Her father lost patience with her
Climax- when the Japanese force invaded Singapore.
Resolution- complete resolution, the aunt pretty much lived a good life despite hardship before.
Characters
Aunt- Obedient, she always did the chores her parents assigned her. Therefore she is also hardworking
Aunt’s parents- Biased, they prefer to have sons but caring as they send aunt to another family
The most interesting segment is when the aunt joined the another family. It is a start of a new life but unexpected things still came.

Release
Conflict
Internal- Eileen’s desire to complain to the neighbours and her natural habit to ignore the situation. However the constant build-up of disturbances from her neighbours has force her to take action.
Climax- Is when Eileen finally decides to call for help from the police
Resolution- Open ended, the story ended in a complicated way as it end when the man murders the puppies.
Eileen: social as she went to visit new neighbours. She is also good a mothering.
Philip: Easily convinced and workaholic
The most interesting segment is when the supposedly kind and gentle man killed the puppies. It was rather shocking and unexpected because the man is nice and helpful.

History of tea
External conflict- an external conflict in the story is the opium wars mentioned in the story. The opium wars broke out with the English ready to wage war for trade.
Internal conflict- an internal conflict in the story is when Beverly mentions of going to china
Climax- The climax in the story is when Beverly mentioned about going to Asia.
Resolution- Revelation, it ended as normal and the fact that the conversation ended. It does, however, give the author the opportunity to think about the family tree.
Characters
Beverly: High Class- she prepares tea in a proper manner way. She is also good-looking as people actually pay attention to her. Smart as she studied at the famous Oxford.
Grandmother- Racist, she note that uncle raja as black man. Despite that she is also caring as she want best for Beverly. Traditional (maintains Chinese tradition)
The most interesting part is the story about the opium wars. In my own opinion, it made the story more interesting using history.
